Abstract

This study examines the song “Sirena” by Filipino rapper Gloc 9 through a qualitative method using discourse analysis, focusing on how language is used to express the lived experiences, struggles, and social realities of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual and Plus (LGBTQIA+) community in the Philippines. Guided by Paul Grice’s Cooperative Principle—particularly the four conversational maxims of quality, quantity, relation, and manner—the research analyzes selected song lyrics to understand how meaning is conveyed and interpreted. Using qualitative textual analysis, the study identifies moments where the lyrics follow or intentionally break these maxims, revealing metaphorical language, emotional depth, and strong sociocultural commentary. The findings shows that the song largely complies to Grice’s maxims, allowing its key messages about identity, resilience, discrimination, and acceptance to reach listeners clearly and effectively. When certain maxims are violated, these variations are deliberate and artistic, serving poetic and expressive purposes rather than creating confusion. Overall, the study highlights discourse analysis as an appropriate approach for uncovering deeper meanings in song lyrics and demonstrates how “Ako ay isang Sirena” skillfully uses language to encourage empathy, self-acceptance, and greater social awareness of LGBTQIA+ experiences.
